Talk 3 on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

June 2007

Dear friends,

The treatise of yoga comes to you only in the precious present, where in the reality unravels! We have been learning many things and finally here we are now to unlearn; to say good bye to the mind!
.................................................................

Yoga Sutra 10.

ABHAVAPRATYALAMBANA TAMOVRITI NIDRA

Dreamless sleep is that modification resulted by a condition of inaction as a state of negation.

Ordinarily there are three states of consciousness. Waking state, dreaming state and sleeping state. Though we generally include the later two states with in sleep, but when we talk about sleep as a modification we mean sleep devoid of dream.

In waking state, the mind is communicating through the senses to the external world; the thinking mind the senses, the sense organs as well of organs of actions are in motion in this state of consciousness.

In dreaming state, the mind is operating with the senses but severed its connection with the sense organs and to the external world. In dream, the world is generated from within from the already stored information which is there in the mind; thinking process also is active.

As a result of all the modifications, both in the waking and dreaming states, the mind gets into a state of tiredness that leads to a condition of inertia or Tamas which we call as sleep.

All the conscious experience of the waking state and subconscious experiences of the dreaming states are retained in the mind with a purpose to understand a further moment by drawing it out from its store house and compare with it. Both these functions of the mind together constitute Memory. But memory as a fluctuation corresponds mainly to the recollection aspect of the mind.

Yoga Sutra 11.

ANUBHUTAVISAYASAMPRAMOSA SMRUTI

Recollection is that mental modification caused by reproduction of previous impression of an object or thought without adding anything to it from any other source. Memory is the final modification in its order of dissolution as it determines the subsequent karma of a person. It also enables a person to handle the worldly dealings effectively and hence it remains till the final dissolution of the ego.

How to stop the fluctuations of the consciousness?

Aum Santhi ! Santhi ! Santhi !

I have commited myself
to be available always for all of you and share whatever I have understood during the course of journey of my life, both in the Indian spiritual traditions and beyond, as a seeker if it is of help for you. What we need in this world is few individuals who could commit themselves to explore their own inner world! It is really difficult to find few of them. However I commit myself to be available always!
