Talk 5 on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

September 2007

Dear friends,

The treatise of yoga comes to you only in the precious present, where in the reality unravels! We have been learning many things and finally here we are now to unlearn; to say goodbye to the mind!
.................................................................

Yoga Sutra 14.

Sa TU DEERGHA kala nairandarya satkarasevito drudabhumi

Such a practice when continued for a continuously long period of time with out break and with devotion becomes firm in its foundation.

The state of tranquility that is established by such practice will not be over ridden by Vasanas.

It is said practice together with detachment is the basis of higher evolution.

Let us see what is detachment according to Gurudev Patanjali?

Yoga Sutra 15.

DRUSTA ANUSRAVIKA VISAYAVITRUSNASYA VASIKARA SAMJNAVAIRAGYAM

When the mind looses all longings towards objects seen heard or described, it acquires a state of utter dispassion which is called Detachment.

This state is not a condition of indifference but a state of contentment within oneself which is developed by practice and passing through the stages of Yatamana, Vyatireka and Ekendriya.

Continuous attempt to abstain from sensuous enjoyment together with observation of the innate pressure to go for it is Yatamana.

By continuous practice one will successfully get over some of the sensuous desires by proper understanding of its roots and gradual and natural renunciation of passion results. This is called Vyatireka.

Though the communication with the external objects of pleasure vanishes to a larger extent the seed of this tendency remains sharper and deeper in the consciousness and this condition is called Ekendriya as it is staying not with different senses but with its root sense the Mind.

When such a detachment is effected it could be possible to train the mind not to look for anything. Whatever is present before it will be seen as it is with both the pain and pleasure content in it at the same time.

Mind starts to naturally withdraw from going into it and stops such activities. Mind without activity is no mind at all as the mind exists only in activity. When the mind drops off the Seer starts to delve in itself.

Vairagya can go to the extent of suprime detachment or para vairagya where in there comes detachment to the Gunas or the constituent principles.

Aum Santhi ! Santhi ! Santhi !

I have commited myself
to be available always for all of you and share whatever I have understood during the course of journey of my life, both in the Indian spiritual traditions and beyond, as a seeker if it is of help for you. What we need in this world is few individuals who could commit themselves to explore their own inner world! It is really difficult to find few of them. However I commit myself to be available always!
