Talk 4 on Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

July 2007

Dear friends,

The treatise of yoga comes to you only in the precious present, where in the reality unravels! We have been learning many things and finally here we are now to unlearn; to say goodbye to the mind!
.................................................................

Yoga Sutra 12.

ABHYASA VAIRAGYABHYAM THANNIRODHA

With practice and detachment, the five fold modification could be stopped. Unknowingly
modifications are constantly practiced by man during waking dreaming and sleeping states and have fixed and accepted it as the natural function of the mind. Stopping the modifications virtually means the stopping of the mind.

Training the mind to come out of its natural function needs a kind of dispassion towards the objective reality; objective reality is understood by the projection of the content of consciousness to it and hence it depends on the subjective attributes projected by the individual mind. So the world is only a question of perspectives, the cause of which is the mind.

Detaching the mind from its objects and its own attributes is known as Vairagya. One has to do practice with dispassion without expecting whatsoever of the result of practice. Such a long and continuous practice will lead to the stoppage of the fluctuations of consciousness.
.................................................................

Yoga Sutra 13.

TATRASTITOU YATNA ABHYASA

Efforts to acquire a normal and fundamental state, rather a tranquil state, of mind beyond modifications are considered as practice.

Undisturbed calmness of the mind is called Stithi or tranquil state of mind. It is not the practice that gives birth to such a state. The practice is to eliminate the activities of the mind and not to create the silence.

All attempts to create the silence of the mind keep the mind away from silence. Practices are to eliminate the distractions of the mind. When the distracting elements are observed, understood and eliminated, what remains will be the one-pointed mind rather than a concentrated mind.

To get into the state of one-pointedness detachment and practice are essential. The quality of One-pointedness attained by the mind when directed towards comprehending the modifications of the mind will be understood fully and the mind starts to settle itself of its modifications.

When the modifications are settled the mind is dropped and tranquility effected.

What happens when one does such a practice?

Aum Santhi ! Santhi ! Santhi !

I have commited myself
to be available always for all of you and share whatever I have understood during the course of journey of my life, both in the Indian spiritual traditions and beyond, as a seeker if it is of help for you. What we need in this world is few individuals who could commit themselves to explore their own inner world! It is really difficult to find few of them. However I commit myself to be available always!
